Old Greenwich is a part of Greenwich Point, which was purchased in 1640 by a woman named Elizabeth (Fones) Feake Hallet, who was originally the niece of John Winthorp. For a while, The town was actually named “Elizabeth Neck”, after the woman who originally purchased the land. It was eventually changed to Greenwich Point, which is where Old Greenwich stands today.

Old Greenwich Station is a commuter railroad system that is located in Greenwich, and is managed by Amtrak.

The rail system works directly with the New Haven Line, a rail system that runs from Connecticut to New York City. The Station itself was built in 1872, it was originally named Sound Beach Railroad Station however this was eventually changed to Old Greenwich Station. The building that the station operates in was built in the late 1800’s and still holds some of its exterior Victorian architectural style. In 1989, the station was registered as a historic place in the nation, however it was registered under the old name the “Sound Beach Railroad Station”. Old Greenwich Station was remodeled as recently as 2009, where it was made to accommodate for longer trains among other renovations. Overall, the project took over $14 million, and was just completed in 2019.

Greenwich Point is a popular beach site that sits in close proximity to Long Island. Oftentimes you’ll find most locals jogging or walking around the area, some visitors will even fish or swim in the area. Greenwich Point sits right on top of Long Island Sound, a body of water that sits between Connecticut and Long Island.

The land was first occupied by the Siwanoy Indians, who would use the land during the summertime in order to fish. In 1640 a man named Robert Feake bought the land for his wife, Elizabeth Feake, and named it Elizabeth’s Neck. They would then build their home nearby, where they would retain the land for more than a hundred years.

The land would then be purchased by a man named John Kennedy Tod, a Scotland born, American raised banker, who renamed the point to Innis Arden. In his early days, Tod was actually a Rugby player, who would represent multiple teams throughout his career, one of which being the Glasgow District. He also represented the West of Scotland District and even played internationally, where he represented Scotland against England.

He then moved to New York were he would begin a new career as a banking partner. Tod would form the J.Kennedy Tod & Co. banking group; he also became involved in restructuring railway properties. Tod would eventually die in 1925, passing away in his Innis Arden summer home.

After the death of Tod and his wife, Innis Arden was given to the Presbyterian Hospital of New York. Innis Arden would operate as a getaway for nurses until the beginning of World War II. Then, in 1944 the land would be sold to the Town of Greenwich, were it would be renamed to Greenwich Point. Greenwich Point is open to anyone who has beach passes, the area is typically open from 6:00 AM until sunset. Greenwich Point has a number of picnic tables, grills, showers, snack bars, restrooms, and plenty of benches to sit at.

Old Greenwich would begin its industrial presence in the 1920’s, where Conde Nast would operate a facility dedicated to printing top selling magazines. Some of these magazines would include Vogue, Vanity Fair, and House & Garden. Old Greenwich also had a bit of an industrial presence during the 50’s, it was home to a vacuum manufacturing facility, operated by Electrolux.

Today, the town is known for being very friendly and community based! so if you’re planning a relaxing vacation, Old Greenwich might be the place for you. You’ll often find the locals walking their dogs or relaxing in front of their porch, ready to mingle. Old Greenwich has a ton of associations dedicated to maintaining a safe and clean neighborhood! Old Greenwich also has a farmer’s market that operates throughout the summer season, the market is typically located on 38 West End Avenue, Old Greenwich.

Binney Park is a 33 acre park that was donated to Old Greenwich by Edwin Binney, an American entrepreneur. Binney Park is filled with walking paths, stone bridges, and even a gazebo, the park also features tennis courts, and even baseball fields. The park is great for picnics and quite popular among photographers, they also host a number of nightly concerts during the summer.

For the most part, the restaurants around the area are locally owned with a quant menu, the most popular of which being Le Fat Poodle. However two of the most popular restaurants serve Italian cuisine, Applausi Osteria, and Lugano.

SoHo, Manhattan, New York

Located in Lower Manhattan, covers 0.3 miles of Manhattan and has a population of over 18,000 (as of 2019). Often times, New Yorkers will prefer to taxi around the area when shopping. SoHo has been at the forefront of national and international chain stores, trendy boutiques and is the location for many different lofts belonging to artist and their art galleries’. The combination of stores and fashion makes SoHo an excellent vacation point for anyone looking for some inspiration! SoHo also has a massive historical significance and is an example of Inner-city regeneration. The area of SoHo was actually named that because the area is located “South of Houston Street” and was conceived in 1962 by Chester Rapkin. The boundaries covering the neighborhood are actually quite interesting, it is agreed that the Northern boundary is Houston Street and the Southern boundary is Canal Street. However where things get complicated is when deciding the Eastern and Western boarders.

During the colonial era the area of SoHo was used as part of a grant, this grant had farmland given to freed slaves. This established the first ever black settlement on Manhattan Island, marking a historic moment for New York City. During the American revolutionary war SoHo became an area with numerous fortifications. After which the area of Soho mainly lie dormant, no development and a lot of the area had to be mortgage because of the war. During the mid 19-century the section began to remodel itself and changed its entire aesthetic. tearing down the Federal and Greek revival homes and made way to a new style of building, this includes solid structures of masonry and cast iron. The area slowly began to reinvent itself, new grand hotels began to go up in the city, new commercial establishments where opened. The streets themselves became lively and the addition of new theaters and food destinations helped its growing popularity. The area itself began to change and it caused the middle-class to be driven out of the area and made way for the small manufacturers. This includes locksmiths, book publishers, makers of fine china, cabinet-makers, makers of glassware, and many more.

This shift led to many more middle-class residents moving out of the neighborhood, this led to a 25% drop in population between 1860 to 1865. Then came the Civil war and the Panic of 1873 which led to large textile firms and other merchandise companies to move into the neighborhood. The area began to develop very quickly after this and soon that section of the city became the wholesale dry-goods and mercantile trade center of Manhattan. However, as the center of the city began to move uptown the quality of the area in SoHo declined rapidly. Soon the area began to become vacant and housed a lot of empty buildings. This was the direct effect of World War II, after its end the textile companies that previously resided within SoHo moved down south. This left many buildings empty and where either repurposed or torn down to make way for parking lots, garages, repair shops and gas stations. In the 1950’s the area became known as Hell’s Hundred Acres, this was due to the area essentially becoming an industrial wasteland. SoHo at the time was filled with nothing but sweatshops and small factories, however because they only ran during the day time at night the area would be empty and lifeless. In the 1960’s a resurgence in interest occurred in the area, and suddenly artist began to move back in leading to a change in the SoHo area.

With the new influx of artists and residents looking to expand their creative minds the area itself needed to become much more “livable”. This brought upon the birth of the Cast-Iron Architecture throughout New York City, Cast-iron was quick and cheap to make and was perfect for a resurgence in a previous hellish area. Currently there are 250 Cast-Iron buildings in New York City and most of these are in the SoHo neighborhood. The cast-iron design is actually a façade and was actually a ploy to make the warehouse structure more visually pleasing, in reality, cast-iron was very brittle. The architectural style of cast-iron buildings was inspired by Classical French and Italian architecture. While these architectural designs would usually use stone, cast-iron was favored due to its “easy to mold” nature, that when combined with neutral colored paint, such as beige, it can become something with a visual similarity. The iron itself made the material very pliable and could be molded very easily despite this it is still a very strong metal. This meant that the window frames within the buildings could be made with significant height, this allowed for more sunlight to fill the rooms that were rented out to artists and the such. At one point, cast-iron was seen as more viable then steel, it was also believed that it was fire proof, all of this was not correct. The truth is that cast-iron has a set of big problems, one of these being that when exposed to heat the material would buckle. in addition the cast-iron material would also crack under the cold, this meant that in the event of a fire, the sudden change in temperature when trying to put out the fire can cause buildings to collapse. at one point in the 1960’s the SoHo area became threatened by a project that would have built a highway directly through the neighborhood, destroying most of its historical significance. This caused major uproar among the community and led to multiple architects and historical preservation movement fighting against the highways construction.

Finally after the proposal to essentially destroy SoHo simply to build a road was put away, artist began to come in. Many artist favored the industrial style buildings because it helped motivate and inspire their work because of how open the space always was. However this cause problems among the city and specifically with its zoning laws and the fear that the building may be needed again for manufacturing. This led to the city creating the Artist Tenant Association and then the SoHo Artist Association. Instead of keeping the area strictly industrial the city opted to allowing artist to live within their work quarters under certain permits. The SoHo area had then finally received landmark designation as the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District in 1973.

SoHo Began to change in the 2000’s and in 2005 became a victim to gentrification and the entire area began to change. Former artists that lived in SoHo began to move to Chelsea during the 1990’s, as of 2013 only a few art galleries remain in SoHo, this includes, William Bennett Gallery, Martin Lawrence Galleries, Terrain Gallery, Pop International Gallery, and a few more. SoHo became very pleasing to be people due to its location, living spaces, Architecture, and its known reputation of being favored by most artist led to more people coming in. The combination of struggling artists, repurposed industrial buildings, unique architecture, and exquisite fashion made SoHo a popular destination for both tourists and buyers. SoHo has many different shopping chains around the neighborhood however most of these shops are in the Northern Area. Those who Manhattan visit frequently know that despite the area, SoHo is always scattered with street vendors trying to vend you anything from purses to jewelry and even off brand clothing.

SoHo is insanely popular all over the world because of its artsy style, unique architecture, lively streets, and the endless stores to shop in. The Lincoln Memorial

Built in order to honor the 16th president of the United States, no vacation to D.C. is complete without visiting The Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial is located on the western end of the National Mall in Washington D.C.. The Lincoln Memorial is a great visit for anyone looking to learn about American history! so if you’re looking to visit the capital be sure to take a car service to the memorial. The Lincoln Memorial is also built in a neoclassical form and was made by architect Henry Bacon. Along with Henry there were many others who helped in the project as well. The designer of the memorial was Daniel Chester, the Lincoln statue was carved by the Piccirilli Brothers, The painter of the murals inside was Jules Guerin, and finally the epithet above the statue was written by Royal Cortissoz. The Lincoln Memorial is one of many different memorials built in order to honor an American president. It has become both a tourist attraction and a symbol for racial equality since the 1930’s and remains that way to this day.

The Lincoln Memorial was actually constructed in the 20th century, this was due to many problems with how and where the memorial should be made. Another one of these issues was the lack of funds, despite people wanting the Memorial to be made most people would not put money forward for the idea. this eventually led to the project being dormant for a while until it was picked up again by Shelby M. Cullom, the senator of Illinois. When they where planning out the design for The Lincoln Memorial they took many details into account and one of which was Abraham Lincolns character itself. President Lincoln was seen as a very humble man, this meant that the memorial to honor him cannot be too ostentatious.

The interior of the The Lincoln Memorial is divided into three different chambers and has different columns supporting the cabin itself. Every single column is about 50 feet tall, 15 meters, and is over 5 feet in diameter. the memorial itself has many different symbolic features and structures, this was all done in order to honor not only the president but also the United States itself. some of which include; 36 columns to represent the states in the union upon his death, inscribed within the structure is President Lincolns principles of life. The ceiling contains bronze and oak leaf decorations, this is combined with Alabama Marble. in addition to this, flood lights were added into the roof in a way that could be concealed, this was done in order to counter the lack of light in The Lincoln Memorial.

This led to the matter being settled through the selection of a simple log cabin shrine, after the West Potomac Park was chosen as the place to build the memorial. The memorial itself was built almost exactly on schedule, however there where a few changes through the build. One of these changes was to make the Lincoln statue bigger so it doesn’t get overwhelmed by the cabin itself, This meant that the statue was increased from its original size of 10 feet to 19 feet. Despite this sudden change during the construction of the monument it was still completed on time and was celebrated upon its completion. During the grand opening, many people where invited including 78 year old Robert Todd Lincoln, president Lincoln’s only surviving son. African Americans where also invited to the opening ceremony, however to their dismay, they were put into a segregated section of the ceremony.

The Lincoln Memorial is located in Washington D.C., specifically on the west end mall, and getting transportation to or from Washington D.C can be rather difficult, especially if you live in another state. Newark Liberty International Airport is one of New Jersey’s main international airports and despite being located in New Jersey, EWR is actually associated more with New York City. EWR was actually originally called Newark Metropolitan Airport, EWR is also located between Essex County, and Elizabeth in Union County, New Jersey. EWR is also operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and is one of the three major airports operated by New York. Newark Liberty Airport was opened on October 1st, 1928 and was the first major airport that served passengers in the New York area. EWR was actually renamed because of the hijacking and crashing of United Airlines Flight 93 in the September 11 attacks. The new name, Newark Liberty International Airport, was chosen to honor the lives lost during the September 11 tragedy and to pay tribute to the Statue of Liberty landmark. While EWR has a great many deal of gates, 121 gates in total to be exact, it does not have that many terminal. EWR only has 3 terminals in total and instead of being numbered they are alphabetized from A to C.

Terminal A was completed in 1973 and has four different levels, Terminal A is operated by the EWR Terminal One LLC and is a part of the Flughafen Munchen GmbH. Terminal A is specifically managed for domestic flights and Canadian flights served by JetBlue, sometimes even flights to the Caribbean. Terminal A also handles some United Express flights, however these are only Ultra-short haul flights. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

One of the most recognizable building designs in NYC, the cultural museum has stood the test of time through its unique architecture and stunning art collection. The art museum itself is located on 1071 fifth avenue in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It is home to continuously expanding collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, early modern art, and contemporary art. The museum would also normally hold exhibitions throughout the year (however due to Covid-19 these may have been subject to change). The museum holds exquisite pieces of art while also being visually stunning itself.

The history of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is actually quite an interesting one. The original founder of the museum, Guggenheim himself, was originally a member of a very wealthy mining family. Guggenheim had been collecting old works of art since the 1890’s and had met with artist Hilla von Rebay in 1926. Hilla von Rebay was a European avant-garde artist who had an affiliation towards abstract art that represented both a utopian and spiritual aspect. In the beginning Guggenheim did not have an official “museum” to display his art collection, instead he began to display it at his own apartment in the Plaza Hotel. sd. Soon enough Guggenheim’s collection had become large enough for him to establish the Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation which focused on the appreciation of modern art and all its varieties. The foundation then opened up in 1939 under the name “the Museum of Non-objective Painting” which was led by both Guggenheim and Hilla von Rebay. By the early 1940’s the foundation began to collect so many art pieces that it had become clear that the museum needed a permanent building. this led to Guggenheim and Rebay writing a letter to Frank Lloyd Wright and had asked him to design a building that would house the art they had collected throughout the years. Frank Lloyd Wright accepted the job and took it as an opportunity to experiment with his organic style in an urban environment. it took Wright 15 years to design the final building, during this time he had gone through 700 sketches and six sets of working drawings but at last he was able to come up with the final design for the museum. In 1948 Guggenheim’s collection had expanded by purchasing the estate of art dealer Karl Nierendorf who has about 730 pieces. Then in 1949 Guggenheim had died, this led to Hilla von Rebay resigning as the director due to the differentiating philosophies she had with the board of directors of the foundation, who all happened to be members of Guggenheim’s family. Despite this, Rebay had left behind many pieces of her own personal collection which included pieces from Albert Gleizes, Alexander Calder, and many more. Eventually in 1952 the Museum was renamed The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the first to create an art building in NYC that did not follow the traditional style of buildings back then, he had instead made something expressive, and personal. The concept of the building was rather interesting, back then most buildings followed a simple scheme of interconnected rooms that would be reached through stair cases and where a person would be forced to retrace their steps in order to exit the building. Instead The Guggenheim Museum was more of a slope, one where upon entering the building you would go up an elevator and then descend via the slope slowly admiring the different pieces of art presented to you. In addition in the center of the slope, in the Atrium, would be the final art piece for visitors to view. The location of the building was carefully chosen as well, the first couple of locations thought of where the Bronx, and even Riverdale. Eventually Wright, Rebay, and Guggenheim had settled n 89th st and 5th avenue, overlooking Central Park. This actually helped with cancelling noise pollution and provided the museum with relief from the urban environment that is NYC. It was not the only thing it helped with however, this also made it easier for transportation to reach the museum itself. Overall despite not being Frank Lloyd Wright’s final design it still turned into an engineering marvel and became one of the most recognizable buildings in New York City.

After Rebay had stepped down as the director of the museum James Johnson Sweeney had become the new director. Sweeney had a very different view on objective painting and sculpture, unlike Rebay, Sweeney had embraced modern objective art and worked on expanded the Guggenheim collection in order to include it. Sweeney had began to include works that where not only in the 20th century, Sweeney had included artists such as Joseph Csaky, Jean Arp, Calder, Alberto Giacometti, and David Smith. During his time the foundation has also received 28 different important pieces of work as a gift. These gifts where given to the foundation by Katherine S. Dreier, one of the founders of America’s first modern art museum collection, also known as the Société Anonyme. Katherine S. Dreier was one of Rebays colleagues and among her collection include works from Juan Gris, Alexander Archipenko, and Constantin Brancusi. Sweeney also managed to acquire works from other artists such as David Hayes, Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. Sweeney had also overseen the final 6 years of the museums constructions and during these times he had a strained relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright. Unfortunately Frank Lloyd Wright had passed away 6 months prior to the opening of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The Guggenheim building turned out to be his final work and became one of his most well known due to its nature and location. The Manhattan skyline was known for its typically rectangular designs, so a building that was cylinder shaped provided a sharp contrast in the city. Interestingly enough the building design was already receiving criticism for its unique aesthetic. it was believed that the building would actually overshadow the art that it held inside. However, Wright believed that it would in fact enhance the art inside. Finally, after the death of Frank Lloyd Wright and Solomon Guggenheim the museum had opened on October 21st, 1959.

In 1961 Sweeney was succeeded as the director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum by Thomas M. Messer. Messer proceeded to be the director of the Museum for nearly 27 years, the longest of any major art institutions. in 1962 Messer decided to put on a large exhibit with a combination of the Guggenheim’s paintings with sculptures. However, presenting three dimensional sculptures had was seen as a problem to the museum nature of having a downwards spiral. The exhibit was actually a great success, though despite that, Messer recalls being scared and having a haunting feeling that this exhibit would be his last. Then, in 1963, Messer had struck a deal with Justin K Thannhauser, who provided 73 private pieces for the museums permanent collection. These art pieces included Impressionist, Post-Impressionists, and French modern masterpieces, it also included works from artists such as Camille Pissarro, Vincent van Gogh, and even Pablo Picasso. After Sweeney came a few other new directors of the museum, such as Thomas M. Messer, and Thomas Krens who helped create new paths for expansions of the museums. Some of these expansions include a new theater (Peter B. Lewis Theater), a student sketching center at the entrance of the Sackler Center, and restoration of the exterior.
