The Museum of Natural History

Welcome to one of the largest museums in the world! located at the Upper west Side of Manhattan and covering about 2 million square feet in total, The Museum of Natural History is the most well known museum in the entire world. the museum is made up of 26 interconnected buildings, has about 45 exhibitions and contains both a library and planetarium to boot. The museum also houses over 30 million different species of plants, animals, and ancient fossils for research. it even holds different minerals, rocks, meteorites along with human remains and human cultural artifacts, it also has special collections of frozen tissues and other data. All of this is monitored and studied by a full-time scientific staff of over 200 and performs over 120 field expeditions every single year.

The Museum of Natural History was founded in the mid 1800’s however, like most of todays famous buildings, it was not originally housed in the building we see today. The museum was firstly held in an arsenal building located in central park and was founded by several people one of them being Theodore Roosevelt Sr., the father of the 26th U.S president. The museum was officially founded in 1869 by the then New York Governor John Thompson Hoffman who signed it off officially on April 6th. The construction of the first building was set out in 1874 and had opened up on 1877, the building itself had a Victorian Gothic aesthetic and was designed by Calvert Vaux and J. Wrey Mould. The building was officially completed at the end of the 19th century and the buildings surrounding it where completed in the early 20th century. The Museum had later on received many more renovations and expansions, most of which were actually internal rather than external. Some of these renovations include one for the dinosaur hall, a restored mural in the Roosevelt Memorial Hall, and additional entrances. Many different buildings where constructed around it, all of which interconnect, and allowed for multiple entrances, however the original entrance on 77th street still stands. The museum is a combination of multiple buildings and in 2016 a plan was put into motion to further expand it, this expansion was delayed until 2019 due to community opposition, the project is now set to be complete in 2022 (However due to covid-19 it is not known if this date is still official).
