    New York’s Most Recognizable Museum: The Guggenheim Museum

    Located on the Upper East Side, and home to an ever expanding collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, early modern art, and contemporary art. The Guggenheim Museum is now one Manhattan most recognizable buildings largely due to Frank Lloyd Wright’s design.

    The foundation first opened under the name “The Museum of Non-Objective Painting” lasting until the early 1940’s.

    Eventually Guggenheim’s art collection had become grand enough to warrant its own building. Guggenheim and Rebay would then write a letter to legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright in hopes he would design the building.

    Frank Lloyd Wright accepted the job and took it as an opportunity to experiment with his organic style in an urban environment. It took Wright 15 years to come up with the final design of the Guggenheim building, sadly Solomon R. Guggenheim passed away 1949, 10 Years before the building was officially completed.

    Guggenheim’s passing led to his foundation renaming the museum, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

    Wright’s design for The Guggenheim was the first of its kind, buildings at the time were designed with interconnected rooms that would be reached through stair cases, forcing visitors to retrace their steps in order to exit the building.

  • New York’s Third Busiest Airport.

    New York’s Redeveloped Airport: LaGuardia

    Outdated facilities, lack of cleanliness, a cramped building, and poor customer service would cause LaGuardia to be ranked among the worst airports until about 2016

    Built in 1929 and covering over 600 acres of land LaGuardia Airport has quickly rose to one of the busiest airports in the world. Located in East Elmhurst the airport is used by New York, New Jersey, and even Connecticut residents. LaGuardia had also gone through a redevelopment that was completed as recently as 2023. This was a much needed modernization as LaGuardia was considered the least upkept airport of the main 3 in NYC.

    Prior to the construction of LaGuardia airport the surrounded land was used as a summer resort development. The resort featured; beaches, lawns, boathouses, and even bathing pavilions. The resort was German influenced and drew similarities to Brooklyn’s Coney Island.

    Sadly prohibition on alcohol and anti German sentiment pushed out residents leaving the resort practically abandoned. Soon the area was industrialized, polluting the water and surrounding beaches.

    The New York Air Terminals saw the potential land and made plans to build a seaplane base in 1929. Upon its inception the airport held a grand opening that featured air races, “flying” boats, and even a speech from George U. Harvey.

    1838 to 1892 the Pennsylvania Railroad would purchase and remodel the terminal, expanding it into one of the most important transportation centers on the East Coast.

    Originally developed as a transportation hub as far back as the mid-1700’s the name Exchange Place would be coined by local streetcars in order to better identify the location. Then in 1812 ferry service was established leading to a massive influx of commuters.

    Sadly at the turn of the century business at Exchange Place began to dwindle, construction of the Holland and Lincoln tunnel caused business to move to Journal Square. Soon rail lines were replaced by bus routes, ferry service would be discontinued in 1949 and finally train service was suspended in 1961.

    The decline of Exchange Place’s popularity was actually a blessing a disguise as it allowed for the Jersey City to embrace its potential as a waterfront.

    Not all private buyers tore up the railroads, PATH renovated their portion of railyards in order to better serve commuters.
